Featured in our Wharf 7 foyer you'll discover stories of Australia's sailors and their boats. They are drawn from our collections and from the Australian Sailing Hall of Fame, developed by the museum with Australian Sailing.
Iconic and archetypal, these are stories of excitement, national excellence and even Australian obsession - a dazzling moment of snatched team victory in the America's Cup, the romanticism and adventure of lone sailors on the world's oceans and the daring of the heavily-canvassed skiff crews of Sydney Harbour.
Included in the exhibition are items of note from the history of Australian sailing, plus the legendary 18-foot skiff Britannia. The skiff raced on Sydney Harbour with the Mark Foy's Sydney Flying Squadron and was renowned for its speed due to the size of its sails - Britannia had one of the largest sail areas in its class. Britannia won numerous championship races from the 1920s to 40s. It was designed, built and sailed by the famous 'Wee' Georgie Robinson - some of his crew played for the Balmain Tigers rugby league club and were known for wearing their striped black and gold club jerseys while sailing. Britannia is celebrating it's 100th birthday this year.
The Australian Sailing Hall of Fame is developed by the Australian National Maritime Museum in partnership with Australian Sailing.
