CSIRO & the Australian National Maritime Museum invite you to take a tour of Australia’s advanced blue-water research vessel RV Investigator.

CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, and the Australian National Maritime Museum invite you to step aboard Australia’s iconic blue-water research vessel,(RV) Investigator, thanks to the support of Port Authority of New South Wales.

This 94-metre super science ship was built to meet the diverse needs of Australian marine and atmospheric researchers. It’s packed with state-of-the-art equipment and can undertake geoscience, atmospheric, biological and oceanographic research anywhere from the equator to the Antarctic ice-edge.

RV Investigator is an impressive vessel and can travel over 10,000 nautical miles on a single voyage, carrying up to 60 scientists, technicians and crew to deliver important research to benefit the nation.

Activities

Take the rare opportunity to tour RV Investigator. Tour will be self-guided at your own pace and take approximately 45 minutes.

Details

Tours will run in 15-minute slots and must be pre-booked. Places are strictly limited.

Tours will start and end at the Australian National Maritime Museum . Your ticket will include bus transport from the Maritime Museum to RV Investigator, which will be berthed a short bus-ride away.

We recommend allowing at least 2 hours to the complete tour (including bus travel to/from the vessel).

Please note that there is no direct public access to the vessel; visitors can only arrive via bus via the Australian National Maritime Museum.

You must show your ticket before you can enter the bus (paper ticket or on your phone).

Please note the following important Health & Safety information for visitors:

  • RV Investigator is a workplace. By attending this event you agree to comply with CSIRO staff and ship crew directions at all times. You must ensure that you and your guests act with reasonable care in accordance with the following conditions:
  • You must remain within the designated areas for this event on the wharf and vessel.
  • You must have a reasonable level of mobility and take responsibility for your own safety. There are steep stairs to climb and trip hazards to avoid. This is a working ship not designed for passengers, so physical access may be challenging. Unfortunately, the vessel cannot accommodate strollers, pushchairs, mobility scooters or wheelchairs.
  • You must wear fully enclosed, flat-soled footwear: flip flops, sandals and high heels are not permitted for safety reasons.
  • As you will be climbing steep, open stairwells, long pants or shorts are recommended.
  • Each child must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian, who is responsible for them while on board. Children must be a minimum of 8 years old to access the stairs on the ship; there is no age limit for children accessing the main deck and associated spaces on this level.
  • You are responsible for your own property and possessions while on board the vessel.
  • You are required to use the handrails when using the stairs. Please ensure that you are not carrying any items (or children) that would prevent you from maintaining three points of contact. We recommend using a backpack to carry personal items on the tour.
  • There are no public toilet facilities available on board.
  • Smoking and drinking are not permitted on board.
  • RV Investigator is a dry ship. All visitors must have a blood alcohol reading of zero.

This open day on RV Investigator is a public event and attendees may be photographed, filmed and recorded as members of the public in attendance. By registering for this event, you agree to being filmed, photographed or recorded and acknowledge that these materials may be used for marketing and promotional purposes by CSIRO and Australian National Maritime Museum.

RV Investigator is part of the Marine National Facility, national research infrastructure supported by the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) and operated by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, on behalf of the nation.
