Aboriginal Watercraft Conservation Project - Phase One: Assessment
The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) houses a select collection of significant Aboriginal watercraft; three of these require assessment, conservation and treatment. These particular vessels are significant for their representation of three different types of Aboriginal watercraft used historically in northern Australia.
In-kind support is offered toward this project for contacts from the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Curatorial and Indigenous teams to collaborate with MAGNT and the watercraft’s Traditional Owners on a session that fosters the sharing of knowledge.
Darwin Military Museum – In-kind Support
Acquisition of 4 x Showcase units to house Darwin Military Museum Naval & Maritime Collection
The Darwin Military Museum has acquired a growing and valuable Naval & Maritime collection of artefacts in recent years. This project sought to acquire 4 x 'showcase' glass display cabinets to suitably house and display this collection in a dedicated space. The cabinets need to be lockable and provide a secure environment for these items as well as making them accessible to visitors. By displaying these items together in a space dedicated to the Naval & Maritime collection, this project aims to much improve the understanding and context of the artefacts.
In-kind support is offered for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s (ANMM) Interpretation and Design team to assist by investigating if there are appropriate ex-ANMM showcase/s which can be delivered to the organisation.

Age of Fishes Museum $2,490
Five Fossil Stands for the Age of Fishes Museum at Canowindra.
The Age of Fishes Museum contains 360 million year old internationally significant fossils. It has a Visitor Information Centre and is a hub for information, education and scientific research. More than 10,000 people visit the Museum each year from universities, schools, and clubs clubs throughout Australia. The Museum has 200 sandstone slabs (80 tonnes) and currently only twelve upright display stands. The stands make the fossils more accessible to visitors, improve the professionalism of the displays and promote tourism. The Age of Fishes Museum brings many visitors to the Central Western Region. The construction of stands will also promote employment and engineering businesses in our local region. The frames must be of heavy duty steel to take the weight of the Fossils which can weigh up to a tonne. Funding is awarded to build one stand.
Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum $1,600 and In-kind Support
LIGHT CRAFT IN A HEAVY SEA - The story of the PV Richmond and its life and times on the Richmond River at Ballina
This project aims to tell the story of the PV Richmond and its service to the Port of Ballina. As the Pilot vessel for the port of Ballina this vessel and those who crewed her played a major part in the Ballina's rich maritime history.She served on the river ( Port of Ballina) from 1932 till 1981 engaged in piloting duties, bar sounding and at times marine rescue. Her story is within living memory for some Ballina residents but as never been fully explored or told to the community. In 1982 she was formally presented to the people of Ballina by the the NSW Maritime Services Board and is now located at the front entrance to the Ballina Naval & Maritime Museum. In a 2012 report by RPS Group the vessel was Identified as being of "considerable technical and aesthetic significance for its inherent character and considered to to be of high research value. In that she provides an important insight into the those who lived, worked, and protected our seas". She provides a tangible link between the NSW Pilotage Service and the town of Ballina. Funding is awarded for interpretation and in-kind support is also awarded for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Curatorial team to conduct an inspection of the vessel and assist in the preparation of a vessel management plan (VMP).
Eden Killer Whale Museum $4,950
Conservation assessment of the orca (killer whale) skeleton known as 'Old Tom'
Funding is awarded to engage a specialist cetacean conservator to undertake a detailed condition assessment of the orca (killer whale) skeleton known as ‘Old Tom’, with a view to identifying any urgent and future preservation needs for the long-term display of the skeleton which remains an icon of Eden’s unique whaling history.

Friends of the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden $15,000
Botanists’ Walk: A project of the Friends of the North Coast Regional Botanic Garden, Coffs Harbour in honour of the 250th Anniversary of Cook’s Voyage
The Coffs Harbour botanic gardens would like to honour the occasion of the 250 anniversary voyage around Australia of the replica Endeavour and its planned short visit to Coffs Harbour by creating a venue for school children and community to come together to learn more about the original voyage. This project aims to show three things: first how the peoples seen by Cook and his crew, and recorded in diaries, collected and used in their daily lives the plants collected so carefully by the botanists. Second, how these botanists collected, stored, recorded and eventually took back to Europe nearly 30,000 samples of local flora, and finally, the importance of this trip in our knowledge of plant taxonomy. This is the first stage of the NCRBG’s longer project to honour many of the men and women who have contributed to our knowledge of the flora of the mid-north coast.

Restoring the 'Cedar Queen', Clarence River Flood Boat
This museum are working towards a project to restore the 7.5m red cedar century old flood boat the 'Cedar Queen'. Flood boats were a part of life on the Clarence River from the late 1800's to around the 1970's, when they were replaced by aluminium boats with outboard motors. As well as being used for transport on the river and during floods, Clarence Valley dwellers held annual regattas at Grafton racing their flood boats and butcher boats.This boat has full length planks and was built from one tree, reputedly from the head of the Clarence River. It was donated to the Lawrence Museum by the Oxenbridge family, who found it lying unused, outside the Scout Hall at Cochran Park. The heritage listed boat has been on display at Lawrence Museum in recent years, without restoration. Lawrence Museum is now constructing a new display area, and the ‘Cedar Queen’ is an important part of local river history and will be a main feature. In-kind support is awarded for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Curatorial team to conduct an inspection of the vessel and assist in the preparation of a vessel management plan (VMP).
Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens Inc $10,900
Endeavour 2020 – Flora collected by Banks A). Creation of Plant Identification Educational Resource (Flora Wheels) for primary school students. B). Establishment of Banks’ Garden featuring plants on the wheels.
Educational tools, native flora identification wheels, will be designed and printed for use by school students during tours of the Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens and the Arakwal National Park. All plants will be those collected by Joseph Banks during his first voyage on the Endeavour. A small garden, featuring the wheels on the plants, will be planted and maintained at the Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens as a living collection.
Manning Valley Historical Society Inc. $1,285
Showcasing Boat Building and Shipping on the Manning River
The Manning Valley has a remarkable maritime history that was crucial to river and coastal trade in the early years of NSW. It has had a continuous boat building industry from 1834 and for a long period in the nineteenth century, shipping on the Manning was the dominant form of transport. Wingham Museum acknowledges this history with its modest, but significant collection of maritime artefacts, photographs and research material that align with the museum’s key themes of “the struggle against isolation” and “the ingenuity of the people of the Manning Valley”. This project proposes to improve the presentation of the “Shipping on the Manning” theme by providing better public access. A kiosk style, information point will be placed at their Manning River display to provide access to photographs and other audio-visual material, which is not currently available to the public. The presentation of this material will allow visitors to investigate the museum’s maritime collection to their level of satisfaction and come away with a better understanding of the significance of the Manning’s maritime history.

This project will conserve two maritime instruments, a hand-held brass/leather telescope and a boxed sextant.
To engage Karen Coote BA; (Sydney) BSc (conservation) London Senior Conservator Australian Museum 1981 – 2000 Head Conservation National Maritime Museum 2001 – 2003 AICCM Conservator of the Year 1998 to conserve two maritime instruments: a brass/leather telescope and a boxed sextant. These objects have been identified as requiring urgent conservation to prevent any further deterioration. Funding is awarded to engage a professional conservator to undertake the work.

This project aims to develop an accessible account of the voyage of Cook in 1770 taken from the combined journals of the four principal journal keepers on board H.M.Bark Endeavour.
In-kind support is offered for one of the ANMM’s Curatorial and / or Digital Outreach team to work with this organisation to assist and aid visitors to Cooktown through the development of an online accessible account of the voyage.
Rockhampton Art Gallery $9,250
Maritime Heritage Interpretation Strategy and Plan for the new Quay Street Cultural Precinct
This project proposes to develop a Maritime Heritage Interpretation Strategy and Plan for the new Quay Street Cultural Precinct. The research aims to develop interpretation concepts and strategies for the new Quay Street Cultural Precinct in Rockhampton, bringing together the sites of Customs House, Bonds Store, Horse Stables and the New Rockhampton Art Gallery with an overlay of maritime history and activities focused upon post Europeans settlement to the region. Funding is awarded for the engagement of a cultural and museums services specialist to consider site and place to establish a post-European settlement narrative of Rockhampton’s maritime history, inclusive of indigenous engagement.

Presentation and Interpretation of the relics from the South Australian Government cutter Water Witch
The Water Witch was the South Australian Government supply vessel that was used to carry out surveys along the coastline and also to support early expeditions in particular that of Edward John Eyre when he explored from South Australia to King George Sound, Western Australia. In 1841 it sailed through the mouth of the River Murray and later, on to Moorundie where it sank in December 1842. In 1986 the Government commissioned a survey to locate the wreck and a number of artefacts were salvaged. The Goolwa History Centre has some of the larger items that were loaned many years ago and the remainder of the items are now available for display. The original exhibit is in need of refurbishing and expanding to accommodate the extra items which will allow for better interpretation of the story. Funding is awarded to prepare story boards and in-kind support is also offered for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s (ANMM) Interpretation and Design team to assist by investigating if there is an appropriate ex-ANMM showcase/s which can be delivered to the organisation.

Preservation of the ST Tancred Wheelhouse
Tancred (BAT-13) was laid down on 3 September 1942 at Port Arthur, Tex., by the Gulfport Boiler and Welding Works; launched on 1 January 1943; and delivered to the United Kingdom under lend-lease on 18 February 1943.Tancred, given the pennant number of W-104 in the Royal Navy, departed Port Arthur, Tex., on 8 March for service in the North Atlantic. After six months under the White Ensign, the tug was transferred to Australia on 2 September 1944, and served "down under" until beginning a career with the Australian Salvage Board in 1949, Tancred subsequently served under the aegis of the Department of Marine and Harbours, South Australia.The Tancred was used to assist liners berthing at Outer Harbour as intended until the arrival of the Tusker in 1958, and was utilised extensively by the Harbors Board then the Department of Marine and Harbors in tows of their own plant, taking many dredgers, barges and pontoons between Port Adelaide and Port Lincoln, Port Pirie, Whyalla, Wallaroo, Port Giles and Ardrossan. Tancred was cut up for scrap in 1988 but the Wheelhouse section was retained and is on display at the Port Adelaide Historical Society Museum. Funding is awarded for work to preserve the wheelhouse.
South Australian Maritime Museum and Britt Gow (Joint Application) $10,000
The Duchess, Pamela and the Captain
This exhibition will showcase photographs documenting life on the windjammer Herzogin Cecile taken by British journalist Pamela Bourne in the 1930s. The South Australian Maritime Museum's (SAMM) goal is to link communities across one of the longest shipping routes in the world through this extraordinary collection from rural Victoria that encapsulates a global story. SAMM will work with small museums in Finland and South Australia to produce an exhibition based around this collection. SAMM plan to digitize the entire Bourne collection so it can be used in other ways and made accessible to a broader audience. Funding is awarded for design and film production.

Dover History Group Inc. $4,000 and In-kind Support
Maritime History of Dover and the Far South of Tasmania digitisation and conversion to display banners
This project is for the digitisation and conversion of local maritime history displays, presently presented on foamboard, to more modern museum-style banners. The previous displays consist of photographs, newspaper articles and stories of Dover and the Far South of Tasmania's maritime history. These boards have aged and deteriorated and the information is planned to be digitised and reproduced onto banners for display.
In- kind support is also awarded for a representative from the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) to provide professional interpretation and design advice and assistance with furthering the museum’s interpretive displays.
Maritime Museum of Tasmania Inc In-kind Support
Preparation of a Vessel Management Plan for the yacht Westward
The yacht, Westward, is one of this museum's most significant collection items. Westward is on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels. She was built in Battery Point, Hobart in 1947 by renowned Tasmanian boat builder, Jock Muir, and won (on handicap), the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races of 1947 and 1948.
Since many of the initial group who maintained the sailed Westward are now unable to do so the Museum realised that the vessel should be better documented and that a workable conservation and management plan was required to help to guide future work on the vessel and also its use. As a start to this project a Significance Study of the vessel was prepared in 2018. This musuem's next step is to prepare a vessel conservation and management plan which would provide a very valuable blueprint for future management and work on the vessel.
In-kind support is awarded for one of the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Curatorial team to conduct an inspection of the vessel and assist in the preparation of a vessel management plan (VMP).

Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village and Museum Warrnambool City Council $6,500 and In-kind Support
Whales: Beneath the Surface
Through an exciting blend of science, storytelling, artefacts and art, Flagstaff Hill will create an exhibit which will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating maritime world of the whale. This project will interpret and tell the history of whales - from the relationship between the Aboriginal people of the Warnambool area and the sea, to European whaling methods through to our modern day love affair with these beautiful creatures we now aim to protect. Through the addition of this exhibition Flagstaff Hill will add further depth and breadth to the current visitor experience.
Flagstaff Hill will transform a currently underutilised area of the Wharf Theatre of around 60m squared to create the exhibition. This area is currently not open to the public during the day and would create an extra space for visitors to explore.
Funding is awarded for; consultation sessions, interpretation panels, production of a soundscape & digital technology, and the design & production of famly activity packs, education resource kits and school activities.
In Kind support is also offered for; a representative from the Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) to provide professional interpretation and design advice and assistance with furthering the museum’s interpretive displays.
National Trust of Australia (Victoria) $9,000
Polly Woodside Tall Ship Online Education Resources
The Polly Woodside Tall Ship in Melbourne delivers tailored education excursions to over 9,000 students annually in Humanities and STEM curriculum areas including History, Geography and Mathematics. In 2018, over 128 schools attended an education excursion at the Polly Woodside. There are two programs on offer – Ship shape: Ready to Sail and Maths@ Sea. These programs appeal to Primary and Secondary levels particularly Year level 4 to Year level 8. The programs are mapped to curriculum learning requirements in History, Mathematics and Geography. Themes of maritime culture, history and exploration are explored within these programs. Currently the Trust provides just a few basic education resources for teachers about the Polly Woodside that do not reflect the quality of the delivered programs and are a significant gap in delivery. The National Trust has previously developed Online Resources for other heritage sites with the History Teachers Association for Victoria and ABC Education. These have been accessible on the National Trust’s own website as well as ABC Education’s website. Funding is awarded to support the National Trust to develop free Online Teacher Resources as Pre and Post Excursion Activities for schools to access related to the maritime history and heritage. These would be mapped to meet Curriculum requirements in History, Geography, Mathematics and Science for mid-Primary levels and lower-Secondary levels.
Port of Echuca Discovery Centre $4,000
Port of Echuca, Preservation Needs Assessment
The Port of Echuca Discovery Centre last engaged a professional to undertake a Preservation Needs Assessment in 2007. In the 12 years since the original assessment was undertaken much has changed at the Port of Echuca, altering many of the recommendations outlined in the original document. In 2014 the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre was opened, including a purpose built archive repository. A small but dedicated team of volunteers are slowly working their way through mainly the paper based and photographic collection to ensure items are stored correctly in the repository. The volunteers hope that an updated Preservation Needs Assessment will provide them with guidance on best practice for storing items & make recommendations for items that require urgent care. Funding is awarded to engage a qualified conservator to undertake the assessment.

Albany's Historic Whaling Station $13,250
Whaler’s Tales: Oral Histories of Albany’s past whaling community
Albany's Historic Whaling Station is a unique maritime museum and 2018 marked the 40th anniversary of the closure of the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company, in which the museum is housed, and the cessation of whaling in Australia, for which commemorative events were organised which increased and enhanced interaction between past whalers, the museum and the local community. Through this interaction it has become critically apparent that the current oral history collection is severely limited and that time is running out for this history to be suitably researched and recorded.
This project aims to expand its oral history collection for archival purposes as well as to have authentic material for application in targeted audio-visual exhibits being planned for the museum. Their mission is to “bring stories of Albany’s diverse past to life” and this project will form the foundation for the development of future interpretative applications. Funding is awarded to engage a production company to undertake interviewing, filming and editing.
Albany's Historic Whaling Station - 3 Flensers
Busselton Jetty Incorporated $15,000
Busselton Jetty Undersea SculpturesPlanning is underway to provide strategically placed underwater sculptures near the seaward end of the Jetty in view of the Underwater Observatory and proposed Australian Underwater Discovery Centre windows. The project will consist of three installations initially, created by local sculptors. Funding is awarded towards the design, construction and implementation of the first sculpture, a replica of the Pericles. The Pericles, 10,925-ton Ocean Liner, left London on her maiden voyage to Australia on 8 July 1908. Just after noon on 31 March 1910, five days after leaving Melbourne, the Pericles struck an unchartered rock 9.7km south of Cape Leeuwin. The ship sank shortly after. The wreck lies 5.6km south of Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse at a depth of 35 metres. The Pericles sculpture will centre on Australia’s maritime heritage and archaeology, history and marine life. It will offer great opportunity for education and aims to build greater awareness within community about the significance of maritime heritage. The sculpture will rest at a maximum depth of 8 metres, to a height of about 5-6 metres deep, fabricated from fibre-reinforced concrete. Underwater educational plaques will provide information about the Pericles, maritime history and aquatic life in the area.
