Creating a cultural heritage interpretive display at the Cape Byron Lighthouse.

To develop and implement a European cultural heritage interpretive display at the Cape Byron lighthouse in the power plant room to connect visitors to the lightstation’s historical significance, the people who lived at Cape Byron (prior to it being de-manned in 1989) and their stories, through the use of contemporary interpretive techniques.  Funding is awarded for the design and manufacture of interpretive panels and the development of an oral history app.

City of Canada Bay $5,000

Parramatta River WWII boat building guided video walking tour and app.

For video content and app development for a 3 hour guided video walking tour of the history of WWII boat building on the Parramatta River.  Content and mapping will be undertaken in collaboration with Ryde & Lane Cove Councils, Google and MMAPSS.

Greater Taree City Council $5,350

Commemorate the Manning River Traders - Croki Wharf and Wingham Wharf

Funding is awarded for a consultant to deliver a specialist heritage report and for the design and installation of signage.   This project will record the history and significance of the wharves, and display this information as an educational resource for the general public and schools.  Signage will be used to inform the community about maritime history, in particular the importance of the river for industry and trade.

Conservation treatment of a model ship made by Crowdy Head Lighthouse Keeper Thomas Thornley

For conservation treatment of a model ship made by Crowdy Head Lighthouse Keeper Thomas Thornley.  The object was assessed under a MMAPSS funded project in 2014-15 titled ‘Waterways Objects – Conservator Assessment and Condition Reports’ arranged by Museums Australia - Mid North Coast Chapter. This project assessed 6 objects in the MVHS collection (48 in total) and identified that this object was in need of conservation work to clean, repair and stabilise it to prevent further damage/deterioration.

Merimbula-Imlay Historical Society Inc $740

Supports for Significant Oyster Punt

For an ARHV listed oyster punt built nearly 100 years ago by local farmer Gus Cole.  The current method of display is unsatisfactory and a management plan has been developed (as per MMAPSS in-kind support 2014-15).  Funding is for the fabrication and installation of supports at strong points as documented in the Vessel Management Plan.

Museum of the Riverina, City of Wagga Wagga $8,420

A boat for all seasons: Conserving the "Conrae" collection

For professional services to assess and care for the “Conrae” collection; which is comprised of: a timber dinghy built in Wagga Wagga in the 1940s for recreational use, a homemade drum net used on the vessel and hessian storage bag and a 1920’s homemade fishing rod.

Securing the Future of the First Tathra Surf Boat

For the first surf boat used by the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club, on the south coast of NSW.  The Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club was formed in 1910 and is one of the oldest surf lifesaving clubs in NSW.  The boat was once clad in oiled canvas, a fragment of which remains on the boat.  This project is to ensure the security and longevity of this surf boat, by seeking an initial conservation management plan for the vessel.

Funding support is awarded for an ANMM Curator to visit Bega and Tathra to conduct an inspection of the boat, assess its significance, prepare its nomination for the Australian Register for Historic Vessels and assist in the preparation of a management plan.

Shoalhaven City Council $8,500

The David Berry Flood Boat restoration, conservation and relocation project

For the restoration of the Flood Boat ready for installation at the Nowra Aquatic Centre.  The grant funding will cover the cost of the repair of timber elements and repaint to conservation standard.  This organisation’s plan is for the vessel to be relocated and displayed at the Nowra Pool Complex along with interpretative signage.

Balmoral Beach Club In-Kind Support       

Develop rotating display of archives material including construction of exhibition display case

In kind support through the offer of a showcase to assist with developing a rotating display of the clubs artefacts.  This will allow the display of items that have not been able to be displayed at the club before and will contribute to the club's access of the archives for the community and the club.  

Mid North Coast Maritime Museum In-Kind Support

Preservation of the “H.M Mermaid” 1819 Survey Cutter Model

In kind support through the offer of a showcase in which to place the model of the “Mermaid” to preserve the many miniature items that are shown and can be easily removed.  Several other ships models are already on display and protected in this manner, this project would complete the model display room and add to the flow through effect.

Gladstone Maritime History Society Inc. $5,401

HMAS Gladstone, Design of Access to Engine Room

For upgraded access to the engine room of this organisations Freemantle Class naval patrol boat "HMAS Gladstone" which is on permanent display at 'East Shores' beside Gladstone Harbour.  The Society are working to set up the vessel for inspection tours.  Funding is awarded to engage a consultant to provide design and engineering for suitable access.

Axel Stenross Maritime Museum Inc. $1,402

Collection assessment and interpretation strategy

For in-kind support an expert curator to undertake a two day on-site assessment and provide advice to the museum volunteers on the significance, display and interpretation of the collection with particular emphasis on the heritage values of Axel Stenross' original 1940's living quarters, boatshed workshop, blacksmith's shop and slipway and the historical boat building artefacts.

Mannum Dock Museum $5,500

Bringing back the oldest paddle steamer in South Australia to life, the PS Mayflower to its 1913 era

The Mannum Dock Museum purchased the PS Mayflower in 2014. The long term objective is to restore operate and interpret the vessel based on the 1913 era configuration as a fishing reach vessel and family home paddle steamer.

Funding is awarded for stage 10 and 11 of the restoration project; Stage 10: For the lower deck: clad walls, build and fit doors, windows, fit toilets, hand basins, surrounds, sink, plumbing, handrails.  Stage 11: the top cabin / deck; frame up, roof and lining, clad walls, lay cabin floor, fix facias, lay top deck, coat, build and fit doors, windows, hand rails, stair case. 

PS Canally Restoration Committee $5,000

Restoration of steam engine and boiler for the PS Canally

In line with the Vessel Management Plan, this project aims to conserve, through the process of repair, restoration and rebuilding, the River Murray paddle steamer the PS Canally.  Funding is awarded to engage an engineer for Stage 2 of the VMP - to restore a Marshall 20hp steam reciprocating engine and install it in the PS Canally.

Rebuild Independence Group Incorporated $7,000

Planning and upgrading of the interpretive display and museum, and preparation of educational materials and collections associated with the American Schooner Independence, Kangaroo Island.

To support the development of the organisations 'Boathouse' and its environs as a living, working museum.  Funding is upgrade the current display, create two video presentations suitable for continuous display and to develop educational material.

Preservation of Flying Fish IV

For an ANMM Fleet Shipwright to visit and deliver a workshop on wooden boat building skills.  Having been debriefed by members of the PESLSC, beforehand, the Shipwright will provide expertise on the best ways to preserve, maintain and improve the vessel’s condition into the future.  The invitation to the workshop will be extended to other relevant organisations in the region.

Devonport City Council - Bass Strait Maritime Centre $4,455

Telling the story of Julie Burgess

Funding is awarded for a graphic designer to develop interpretation for panels to be installed at the mooring of the Julie Burgess in Reg Hope Park. 

The ARHV listed former crayfishing ketch has been fully restored with modifications to comply with the current AMSA survey conditions.  The ketch undertakes regular two hour sails out of the Mersey River into Bass Strait, charters and tours.

Friends of Maatsuyker Island (Wildcare) $4,000

Maatsuyker Collection - Part 2

To complete the cataloguing of heritage objects in the Maatsuyker Light station light tower and on the island from the last 123 years of European Collection.  The catalogue will be made available to the public on the internet through the Wildcare website, as it was with Stage 1.

Port of Echuca Discovery Centre $8,000

Preserving Australia's History - Restoring the iconic Log Slip at Echuca Wharf

Funding is to engage professional services to undertake a preservation survey of the Echuca log winch, one of the oldest surviving original pieces of equipment relating to early 20th Century red gum timber milling.  The bigger project to which this project relates will reinstate the original log skid attached to the log winch and preserve it as a working exhibit.  The restoration of the log winch and slip would complete the story at the Port as the Paddle steamers, barges, sawmills, railway station and steam train are all in place as part of the displays at the Echuca Wharf.

Queenscliffe Maritime Museum Inc $1,000

Nineteenth Century Marine Toilet, Preservation, Conservation: Stage 2, Interpretation and Display

In Stage 1 of this project MMAPSS supported the preservation of the toilet.  It will soon be returned to the Museum for interpretation and display.  This funding is for Stage 2   to develop appropriate interpretative signage and display for the toilet.

Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism Inc. $9,900

Yarrawonga Mulwala Interpretive Signage Project

Funding is for 3 (of 18) signs with maritime content to be placed around Lake Mulwala to provide the public with a working knowledge of the history of Lake Mulwala and surrounds.  QR codes will be utilized to provide more detailed information.  The maritime signage will be included largely under the theme of submerged Lake Mulwala.  In 1939 the weir was completed and Lake Mulwala was filled, flooding the surrounding valley and submerging maritime artefacts of significance such as Yorta Yorta Artefacts, Halburds Punt, and Paddle Steamers.

Albany’s Historic Whaling Station (Discovery Bay Tourism Precinct Ltd) $6,800

Whaling Station interpretation, research, design and sign

For updated site interpretive signage to update 20 year old signage and ensure visitors are led around the site.  For the introduction of 30 X 5mm alumina panels to interpret the site.  Funding is for the final design work and production of the signs.

Duyfken 1606 Replica Foundation $2,200

Audio Tour – mobile phone/portable device App (Application)

The  Duyfken  Replica  Foundation  has  been  invited  to  participate  in  the  Dirk  Hartog  400th Anniversary celebrations on 25 October 2016 at Cape Inscription, Dirk Hartog Island.  To support the ceremony program at Cape Inscription, the Duyfken will undertake a 3.5 month, voyage.  The Duyfken Foundation has developed an App based Audio Tour that will guide visitors at the port visits on their journey through Duyfken.  Funding is for costs related to the app development.

Maritime Archaeology Association of Western Australia (MAAWA) $9,000

Program for the Rottnest Island Interpretation of Shipwrecks and Maritime Heritage (PRIISMH)

The project aims to: 1. Enhance the Rottnest Island content of the existing ‘Shipwrecks WA’ website and smart phone app. 2. Undertake research plus undertake manual and 3D recording of terrestrially visible anchors on Rottenest Island (RI).  3. Support the renovation of one signage from the terrestrial shipwreck trail on RI and 4. Implement detailed 3D mapping of shipwrecks around RI.  Funding is awarded for 3D processing of underwater data, 3D training workshops, to design, build and install signs and for website and app content work.

Nyamba Buru Yawuru Ltd $10,000

Mapping the pearling heritage of northern Australia

For the development of a digital database of the pearling heritage sites of northern Australia. This work will build on the initial version of the map currently touring via the exhibition ‘Lustre’.  The data, including audio visual material, will be collated and the sites will be mapped in multiple and composite layers by GIS (geographical information system) by a cartographer.
