  • The Rats of Tobruk were able to hold out against Rommel for so long because of the amazing work of the British, Australian and South African navies. Based in Tobruk, Poland coordinated the campaign to keep up the supply of munitions and provisions, despite dangers and appalling losses.

He went on to command in some of the hair raising naval actions that kept the Mediterranean accessible, just, to Allied shipping. His eye witness notes offer remarkable day by day insights into events that shaped history.
