Join us online, for the fascinating story behind Cook and Banks' voyage on the HMB Endeavour to the rumoured Great Southern Land.

Discover why Cook, Banks and the crew of HMB Endeavour embarked on a momentous three-year voyage around the world, where they stopped along the way. Learn more about the significant contributions of the expert navigator and skilled cartographer, Lieutenant James Cook, along with the young botanist Joseph Banks with his party of scientists and artists. We will also discuss the impact of the voyage and think about how it changed Australian History, leading to the arrival of the first fleet almost 18 years later.

This session covers content specifically related to the year 4 Australian Curriculum. It focuses on the journey led by Lieutenant James Cook and Joseph Banks onboard the HMB Endeavour, including the charting of the East coast of Australia in 1770. It discusses their interactions with first peoples in the Pacific and Australia and the lasting impacts of the voyage.

Program duration: Sessions run for approximately 45 minutes. If multiple classes are in the same session, session may run slightly longer to allow for additional questions from students.

Technology: This is an online lesson delivered as a Zoom meeting and you will be sent a link after the booking is confirmed. We are happy to discuss other options if required (such as Microsoft Teams). For this session we recommend students watch on a large screen, projector or smartboard and you will need a camera and microphone to engage with our presenter. If students are learning from home they are able to join the session.

Content - The journey(s) of at least ONE world navigator, explorer or trader up to the late eighteenth century, including their contacts with other societies and any impacts. Students outline the voyages of ONE early explorer [Captain Cook] and explain the impact of their voyages. 

The nature of contact between Aboriginal people and/or Torres Strait Islanders and others, for example, the Macassans and the Europeans, and the effects of these interactions on, for example, families and the environment.  Students explain the term terra nullius and describe how this affected the British attitude to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
