A seemingly harmless piece of discarded fishing net, left to drift in the ocean can strangle a sea turtle travelling to its nesting ground. Sharks, fish and other marine life all over the world have also suffered similar fates through entanglement in fishing nets. Those nets are called 'ghost nets' - see how they're turned into beautiful works of art in our exhibition Au Karem Ira Lamar Lu – Ghost Nets of the Ocean.
- Colourful and interesting rope pieces of different lengths
- Scissors (to cut rope)
- Raffia/coloured twine for wrapping with
To Make:
Step 1.
Select your pieces of rope and cut them to the size you want to use. For example: pieces of rope approximately 10cm/15cm/20cm.
Step 2.
Place the pieces of rope in a bunch with a variety of lengths gathered together. (Similar to how you might gather cut flowers).
Step 3.
Use another piece of rope or coloured twine, with a length of around 20-30cm to tie the bunch together tightly. You can wrap the twine around and knot to fix in place or continue wrapping up the length of the rope strands for decoration.
Step 4.
Unravel and tousle the ends of your rope to create wild and wavy strands at the top. You might like to add fishing weights for decoration as well.
