Cockatoo Island Family Fun Sunday

Join us for a full day of adventure on Cockatoo Island on Sunday October 22.

  • COCKATOO ISLAND ADVENTURES

    SUNDAY 22 October  10.30am – 3.30pm  FREE ENTRY

    Join us for a special day of family fun amongst the spectacular shipyards of historic Cockatoo Island. Make creative crafts, dress up in costume, have your face painted, enjoy circus workshops, character tours, swing dancing, steam crane demonstrations and more.



    Steam Crane Demonstrations
    10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm & 2.30pm
    See an antique steam crane from the early 1900's come to life. 

    Take a Cruise on the Lady Hopetoun
    11am, 11.45am, 12:30pm, 1.15pm, 2pm (Trips take 30 minutes)
    $10 Adults, $5 Kids under 12, Family $25

    Cruise around Cockatoo Island on Sydney Heritage Fleet's Lady Hopetoun, the Edwardian steam launch lovingly restored by SHF volunteers.

    Swing Dance Performance and Workshop Sailor Style
    11am, 12pm and 1.30pm (30 minute sessions)
    Jump, jitterbug and twirl with the crew from Swingout Sydney in interactive swing dancing performances and workshops.

    Hula-Hooping Performance and Workshop - Ship Shape
    11.30am, 12.30pm and 2pm (30 minute sessions)
    Join Tina Green for a display of daring and delightful circus arts. After the performance join in and learn hula-hooping skills and circus moves inspired by sailors and submarine spies.

    Kids on Deck - Rats, Bats and Bunting Tossers
    11am – 3pm 
    Play, create and discover in Kids on Deck with creative art making, games and dress ups. Spy through the periscopes, raise the signal flags and learn secret semaphore codes as we salute to all things navy and nautical inspired by the historic cockatoo island shipyards.

    Make your own model submarine or battleship, craft a souvenir badge or some bat bunting. Play dress-up in sailor style!

    Steam Crane Demonstrations 
    10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm & 2.30pm

    See an antique steam crane from the early 1900's come to life.


    Boat rides on the Captain's Launch Sydney
    10:30am - 3:00pm (Trips take 15 minutes)


    Cruise around Cockatoo Island on the historic Sydney, which was the Captain's Launch of the HMAS Sydney, built in 1945 and lovingly restored by our volunteer team.


    Bubbles and Beats
    10.30am – 2pm
    Enjoy spectacular interactive bubble art performances and dance the day away with sweet DJ beats.  


    Face Painting - Sea Creatures, Sailors and Swashbucklers
    11am – 3.30pm
    Have your pirate face, sailor tattoos or sea creatures painted on. 

    Saltwater Stories - Drop-in Workshop
    12pm – 3pm
    Join D’harawal knowledge keeper and educator Shannon Foster for creative drop-in workshops inspired by Cockatoo Island’s Indigenous history.


    Crooked Characters and Colonial Escapades Tour
    1pm and 3pm (1 hour tour)
    Crooked Characters of Cockatoo Island and other Colonial Escapades is an hour-long family friendly journey into the hilarious and fascinating underbelly of Australia’s colonial and recent history and mythologies. Capacity is strictly limited so be sure to register at the visitors centre on arrival.


    Blinky the Lighthouse - Photo Ops
    10.30 – 11.30am, 2 – 3pm
    Have your photo taken with our adorable inflatable lighthouse. Share your pics with @anmmuseum  @cockatooisland  #familyfunday


    Activity Trails
    All day. Self-guided.
    Pick up a trail from the visitors centre and explore the Island’s fascinating histories.

    HOW TO GET TO COCKATOO ISLAND

    Cockatoo Island is the largest island in Sydney Harbour, just a short ferry ride from Circular Quay. Here's a map of Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour with Ferry Wharves.

    You can catch a public ferry running from Circular Quay and Barangaroo (Darling Harbour), as well as from wharves along the F3 Parramatta River ferry route. Click here to get more information.
