    Join us for special themed family fun Sundays twice a term with creative activities, lively performances, character tours and face painting. 

    Ocean Commotion

    Sunday 26 June, 11am–4pm

    Join us as we celebrate the opening of Wildlife Photographer of the Year, as well as world sea turtle day, with fun activities for the whole family. 


    Program

    11am–3pm Kids on Deck, creature feature: Art making games and dress ups inspired by new exhibition Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

    Make a crazy creature mask, a cardboard camera, a woven sea turtle, or print your own calico tote bag to keep. Dress up in sea creature costumes and play with interactive games.
    11am–3.30pm Nautical face painting: Have your face painted with your favourite sea creature.
    11.30am, 12.30pm, 2pm
    Poetry in motion science show: Enjoy a lively and interactive presentation on the science of motion and flight inspired by the endangered shore birds seen in the Jeannie Baker Circle exhibition.
    11am–2pm 'Wear your Wild Onesies' Dress Up Competition: Come dressed as your favourite ocean creature or terrestrial animal and enter the competition on the day for your chance to win a wild prize pack from the museum store!

    Inflatable turtle photo opportunity: Have your photo taken with our inflatable turtle character.
    10.30–11.30am & 2.30–3.30pm
    Oceans of stories: Enjoy storytelling with puppetry and musical instruments about our favourite sea creatures.
    11am-3pm
    Squish, slop & swirl sensory play: Especially for little ones. Enjoy science experiments and sensory play inspired by oceans and marine creatures.

    Marvellous Movers

    Sunday 3 April 2016 

    Steam, steer, sail and soar! Join us for a special day of family fun celebrating marvellous movers in our collection.

    Enjoy a boat ride on visiting steam launch Lady Hopetoun, join an interactive circus workshop, take a family-friendly character tour through the galleries or get creative with crafty fun and face painting in Kids on Deck. 

    Program

    11am–3pm Kids on Deck, Off and Away: make a steampunk goggle mask, a model boat, or paper craft hot air balloon, enjoy dress ups and interactive games.
    11am–2.30pm Steam launch boat rides (30 minute sessions): enjoy a special harbour ride on Sydney Heritage Fleet's historic steam launch Lady Hopetoun (additional entry fees apply)
    11am–3.30pm Face painting
    11.30am, 12.30pm, 2pm
    Marvellous Movers Circus Workshops with Heidi Hoops
    12pm, 1pm and 2.30pm 'Oh the places you'll go' character tours: Join Captain Kinetic to take a journey up periscopes, past pumping engine pistons, onto a flying yacht and spinning next to the rotor blades of a helicopter as we explore different forms of transport in the museum's collection.
    1.30pm–3.30pm Kooky Kinetic Creations: pop past our makers cart to experiment with crafting marvellous moving things and learn about the science behind them.

    14 February 2016 - Row Row Regattas

    Celebrate Lunar New Year and all the grand traditions of dragon boat racing and sailing regattas at the Museum’s special family fun day, Row Row Regattas!

    Enjoy spectacular Lion dance performances, musical storytelling, on water displays, facepainting and creative arts and craft activities.

    Program


    11am–3pm Kids on Deck: Make dragon shadow puppets, paper lanterns or build a model boat. Learn about the traditions of regattas and dragon boat racing.
    11am–3.30pm Face painting and temporary tattoos: Have lunar new year inspired designs painted on or get a temporary tattoo.
    12pm–4pm Kids Activity trail: Follow a trail through the spectacular wooden racing boats in Wharf 7. Complete it to claim your prize.
    11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm
    Dragons and Drum-beats: Musical Storytelling Performances. Join in lively and interactive musical storytelling performances.
    1pm and 2pm Lion Dance Performances: Be amazed by lion dance performances by Dong Tam Association.
    2pm–3pm Dragon Boat displays and Meet the Paddlers. Experience the excitement of a demonstration dragon boat race with displays from a Dragon Boats NSW Club on the museum’s water front.  Meet the paddlers and find out more about dragon boating.

    Stay and enjoy the Lunar New Year celebrations at the Lunar Markets, 4pm–9pm in Pyrmont Park.

    This event is part of the City of Sydney’s 2016 Chinese New Year festival.

    Sunday 17 January - Pirate Invasion Family Fun Day

    Shiver me timbers, the pirates are here! Explore the history of the Golden Age of Piracy with authentic displays of 17th and 18th century pirates at battle, at play and at work. Join our special guest historical re-enactors and come dressed in your buccaneering best for a day of family fun at the museum.

    11am–3pm Play like a Pirate: join in Golden Age pastimes with an interactive display of games

    Fight like a Pirate: learn about pirate weaponry and battle tactics in an interactive display
    11am–3pm Sail like a Pirate: brush up on your seamanship skills with scrimshaw, knots, rope-making and more
    11am–3pm Meet a Golden Age Pirate Re-enactor and pose for a photo
    12.30pm and 2.30pm Cutlass Duelling Display: see historic weaponry in action in a cutlass duel by historic re-enactors 

    Action Stations Family Fun Extravaganza

    To celebrate the launch of our all-new immersive experience Action Stations we're running a whole month of family fun Sunday events saluting to all things navy and nautical. Enjoy a range of creative activities including face painting, performances, displays by the Royal Australian Navy and more.

    11.30am, 12.30pm, 2pm Ship Shape Circus Performance and Workshop with HMAS Heidi Hoops. 30 minute sessions.

    Sunday 13 September - Talk Like A Pirate

    Get ready for the International Talk like a Pirate celebrations with a day of swashbuckling fun at the museum. Dress in your buccaneer best for a chance to win great prizes, take a treasure hunt, meet a historic Pirate re-enactor, join in interactive circus games, create pirate crafts, enjoy face painting and more.

    Members receive a free pirate eye patch with every purchase of a kids meal at our Yots Cafe!
