The Australian National Maritime Museum Arts and Culture Medal was awarded to Ghada Daher-Elmowy as part of the 2021 Premier’s Multicultural Community Medals.
Ms Daher-Elmowy first established herself as an artist performing classical songs in Arabic and various Arabic dialects with solo concerts in Parramatta and at council-run cultural festivals. Ghada established the not for profit Andalus Arabic Choir (AAC) in 2013.The choir is open to Arabic and non-Arabic speakers alike and preserves the heritage and culture behind traditional Arabic music.
‘The museum congratulates Ghada on this award brings to her work. She is a champion of her culture bringing Arabic and Andalusian traditional music to the community’, said Kevin Sumption, Director and CEO of the Australian National Maritime Museum.
‘Cultural diversity is one of the key pillars of our community. We must always honour and cherish it. Artists such a Ghada bring their culture to life and share it with all of us.
‘The museum is proud to continue its support of Multicultural NSW and bring to life the stories of migrants to Australia through its Welcome Wall and migration programs.’
