This thoroughbred Australian supermaxi is the most successful Sydney to Hobart racer in history.
The legendary Wild Oats XI is scheduled to arrive at the Maritime Museum on the 26 January.
Wild Oats XI will be open to the public for three days only - from 26 to 28 January.
The maxi yacht will be open from 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm, and you'll be able to speak with a person from Wild Oats XI on board, as they guide you and explain what life on a high-seas racer is really like.
NOTE: There will be a limit of 10 people on board at any one time, and children will need to be 10yrs or older to come aboard.
Both a barebones racing machine (‘you wouldn’t want to be down below for too long’) and an aesthetic and design triumph, the silver/grey maxi yacht has remained on the technological edge ever since it was built.
The yacht was commissioned by the late Bob Oatley AO, a keen sailor and strong supporter of the sport in Australia.
It was launched on Dec 2, 2005, and has since gone on to win line honours in the Sydney to Hobart eight times, breaking multiple race records along the way.
Designed by Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design in San Diego, USA, the supermaxi features a deep canting keel. This 12-tonne lead bulb keel moves from side to side, controlled by a huge hydraulic ram.
This innovation increases the yacht’s stability without needing extra weight, giving it an exceptional power to weight advantage over a conventional keel design.
