Rowan Brownette spent 18 years at sea with CSR, Howard Smith and Banana Boats, and 29 years as a marine pilot in Sydney.
This annual lecture series brings members of the Maritime Museum and Sydney Heritage Fleet together.
Phil Renouf was the much-loved and highly respected leader of Sydney Heritage Fleet, the volunteer-based organisation that specialises in the restoration and operation of important historic vessels and has its offices, library and non-floating collections housed in the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Wharf 7 Maritime Heritage Centre. Phil led Sydney Heritage Fleet at a critical time in its development, and this annual lecture series was inaugurated to honour his significant contribution to Australian maritime heritage.
Guest Speaker - Rowan Brownette

This presentation will focus on the history and importance of Port Jackson to the development of the colony of New South Wales and the rapid growth in the number of wharves within the port. Guest presenter Rowan Brownette's recollection of these wharves, from the point of view of a ship’s captain/marine pilot, and the disappearance of these to make way for an aquatic playground.
Rowan Brownette spent 18 years at sea with CSR, Howard Smith and Banana Boats, and 29 years as a marine pilot in Sydney. The last 7 years of his working life were spent as Pilot Manager and Senior Pilot for the Port Authority of NSW.

John Jeremy, Naval Architect and Cockatoo Island expert, presented the 2015 Phil Renouf Memorial Lecture.
John spent most of his career at Cockatoo Dockyard in various planning and technical positions before being appointed Chief Executive.
He spoke on the topic of ‘Memories of Shipbuilding and Ship Repair in Sydney’, discussing the vital history of ship building and repair in Sydney through his own personal experiences.
