The seaside calls - Australian holiday posters

11 November 2009 - 7 March 2010

From the Great Barrier Reef to Phillip Island, ten posters from the Australian National Maritime Museum Collection promote holiday destinations during the 1930s to 1970s.

Colourful posters, by artists including the well-known Percival Trompf and James Northfield, enticed visitors to enjoy holidays in Australia.  The Commonwealth and state governments commissioned posters to sell Australia to a domestic and international tourist market.  Many of the posters from the 1930s were commissioned by the Victorian Railways.  By the 1960s and 1970s posters reflected changes in transport with airlines promoting holiday travel.
