 Woman holding key

Waves of migration explores migration to Australia and the compelling stories of those who've come across the seas. Discover Australia's migration history, personal stories of immigration and share your own story of migration to Australia.

Launching on Australia Day, the Waves of Migration eight-minute animated projection will be displayed on the museums iconic roofline. It will run daily from 9.30 pm - 11 pm daily until 13 February.

The lightshow has been enhanced with new content including the story of Gina Sinozich, a Croatian migrant artist. A new, specially composed soundtrack accompanying the show will be played on Pyrmont Bridge.

On their own - Britain's child migrants

On their own online exhibition

From the 1860s, more than 100,000 children were sent from Britain to Canada, Australia and other Commonwealth countries through child migration schemes. They were sent by charitable and religious organisations, with government support, in the belief that their lives would improve, and that they would provide much-needed labour and increase the population.

Few were orphans; many came from families who were unable to care for them. The lives of these children changed dramatically and fortunes varied. Some succeeded in creating new futures. Others suffered lonely, brutal childhoods. All experienced disruption and separation from family and homeland.
