The museum offers more than 30 programs for school students of all ages, across a number of curriculum areas. These programs include:

Costs and inclusions

All school visits include a school induction and entry to the museum's special temporary exhibitions, permanent gallery exhibitions and HMAS Vampire. School bus parking can be arranged free of charge. Teachers and supervising adults visit free of charge.

Please note: Entry to submarine HMAS Onslow is dependent on space available and costs $2.00 extra per student. Entry to tall ship James Craig is $4.00 extra per student except where stated as included.

Safety and supervision

The Australian National Maritime Museum is committed to ensuring the safety of all our visitors. Please print out and complete the School OH & S Risk Management Plan (PDF, 78kb) prior to your school visit.

Visiting school groups should have a ratio of:

  • one supervising adult per 10 students for years K-6
  • one supervising adult per 15 students for years 7-12

Entry for teachers and supervising adults is free.

For safety reasons, groups of no more than nine students, plus a supervising adult, may board the submarine HMAS Onslow at one time, at intervals of approximately 10 minutes. Groups of no more than 15 students, plus a supervising adult, may board the destroyer HMAS Vampire. School students must have sufficient adult supervision and must remain together as a group if they wish to board the vessels. All school visits on HMB Endeavour must be part of a guided tour. Groups comprise no more than 10 students, plus a supervising adult and the guide. Guides are included as part of the tour cost.

Every day 9.30 am - 5.00 pm (6.00 pm in January)
Closed 25 December (Christmas Day)
School tours are conducted during term times.

Lunch and other breaks

Breaks can be scheduled for either 15 or 30 minutes depending on the time limitations of the school. We ask that students do not leave the museum precinct during this time. A kiosk and toilets are available at the museum.

School bags must be left in allocated secure storage facilities on site.

Transport and location

The museum is accessible by coach, government bus 443, Sydney ferry (Pyrmont Bay Wharf), Light Rail (Pyrmont Bay stop) and train (walk from Town Hall or take light rail from Central). Plan your trip and view a map of Darling Harbour.
